COVID 19 has resulted in a global crisis which no one was ready to fight against. For over a year since 31 December 2019, the virus has killed and has harmed many people all around the world. Scientists and many professionals have worked hard to create a vaccine. As a result, just recently, vaccines were created and people started to get vaccinated. However, the question is, should COVID 19 vaccination be mandatory?

Some of the major companies that are creating the vaccines are Pfizer, Moderna, and AstraZeneca. Both Pfizer and Moderna developed mRNA vaccines using the messenger RNA: the molecules responsible for sending genetic instructions to create proteins. However, unlike these two companies, AstraZeneca has created an Adenovirus vector vaccine which uses a harmless modified chimpanzee cold virus to deliver a piece of genetic code to cells.

Despite their urgent need and hopeful promise of success, not all vaccines are considered safe. For instance, AstraZeneca is known for its numerous side effects including vomiting, fever, and even death. In the case of Pfizer, it is also known for similar such side effects as fever, chill, and headaches.

According to a study by Ipsus, when 1,000 South Koreans were asked if they preferred Covid 19 vaccinations to be mandatory, 66% of them answered yes. However, despite the majority’s opinion, South Koreans currently are not required to get vaccinated. In the same time, in Italy where 60% preferred mandatory vaccinations, the government has requested everyone to get vaccinated.

That said, despite the majority’s opinion, I hold that vaccinations should be a choice, not a mandatory requirement. Especially in Korea where citizens do not have a choice so as to which vaccine they get, vaccinations should really be a choice. There would be no one to take care of the side effects of the vaccinations but the one who got vaccinated; therefore, vaccinations should stay as a choice in Korea and other countries around the world.
